Whose your DADDY( The MATUKU War)

Though a small part of Fijian history or one of small significance, it remains the cornerstone of Matukuan debate  and its significance in the LAU group only recently through Ratu Sukunas administration but was part of the Lomaiviti Group.As a young boy, as it would be for other Fijian famillies of their history,  I would sometimes be reminded of this past. The elders found it necessary as it defines our existence to this very day. The Valu ni Lotu as it was being refered to was nothing more then a pretext of  the Tongan warlord( Maafu) to expand his territory. Conquering the Yasayasa Moala has been on his mind although he was cautious of being reprimanded by the missionaries for they would eventually find out  his intentions and methods of spreading the gospel. My grandfather would sometimes admit with a bit of guilt that we were one of the last to accept Christianity he would sometimes defend it by stressing the method that Maafu was using didn't augur well with our ancestors then. In those times clubbing people for any reason meant war. Then the war was at Matuku's doorstep. After pacifying Moala who fought but lost, credits to them, Totoya was their next target, Totoya being the passive(sometimes refered to as pet of the other two islands) of the two accepted Christianity in exchange that they won't meet the same fate as Moala. Maafu collected warriors from the two subdued islands and headed for Matuku. By then the warriors of Yaroi, Natokalau Lomati, Ravi2 and the rest of Matuku led by Ratu Meli Saronicava as their General, the youngest son of the then Tui Matuku Roko Yaroi were prepped for battle. On their arrival there was slaughter on the beach. A big contingent of Tongan soldiers were slaughtered there as were some of their allies. That beach is named after the slaughter as Moor of Blood or Disembarkment of Blood, in Fijian "Udu Dra" and is a testament to that. It was told that it took six months for the standoff and finally a tactic by the Tongan warlord to bring one of Tui Matuku's (king of Matuku) daughters to plead with his father to come to Lakeba and accept Christianity like the rest of the Lau group finally led to his acceptance of the faith and he sent for his son to recede the protection of Matukus walls. He left for Lakeba and on his arrival was surprised that the same Tongans whom he was travelling with shouted cries of victory which meant Matuku has been subdued. To his embarrasement he was furious with his daughter, had he known of such treachery he would have stayed and continued with the fight. He asked the Tongans to be taken back but who in his right sense of mind would go through that nightmare again. Matuku finally accepted Christianity in the manner it was supposed to have been. This history survives with us and our next generation of Matukuans so we be reminded of the sacrifices of our ancestors and  with the realization of defending your livelihoods means the survival of the future generation and you protect it with your life. We are the envy of the Lau Group in that we do not wear the tawala or gafi2 as they say it in functions as a sign of a conquered people, the rest of Lau wear them signifying this and they sometimes wear it with pride without knowing the meaning of it. The Tongans regard this as an embarrassing chapter of their history in Fiji and leaves reasonable doubts on their side of the story which has become widely accepted since most early writers and local historians were from the North of Lau. Our true acceptance of the faith led one of Matuku's sons( from Natokalau) to be the first  Fijian President of the Methodist Church and led the independence of the methodist church from it's governing body in Australia in the 60's. I only pray that the Tongans or anybody for that matter had realized that using force or treachery will not end up well for them.......remember nothing can be hidden for long. Eventually there's a breaking point.

  1. Just to clarify on your story that the Tui Yaroi at the Ai Valu ni Lotu nei Maafu, wasn't crowned as Tui Matuku by then, as you mentioned(qoka na yaca vou qai kauta mai o maafu). He was only called as Tui Yaroi. The Tui Matuku title originated after the war made by Maafu & Lakeba when they choose Rt Meli Saronicava to be Tui Yaroi & Tui Matuku at Lakeba. The Tui Yaroi at that time was Roko Rakuita, the father of the present son's totoka in Yaroi, that made up the Mataqali Turaga Keteijiliva of today. Roko Rakuita had plenty kids from more then 1 wife.The sons of Roko Rakuita & their descendant's that are still living today in Yaroi & other parts of Viti & overseas. The known kids of Roko Rakuita from eldest to the youngest was 1. Eldest(yalewa) Roko Verevere married to the Nayalewakalou(Vaka Nakabaji/Natokalau) 2. 2nd eldest(yalewa) Roko Taranaivini Kuruavesi(married to the Tui ketei family,totoya)3. 3rd eldest(son)Rokoroko(on record today, his descendants are extinct,but known members exist today)his yavu is where the Burotukula's House(vale ni bose) is sitting on today. 4th(2nd son) Roko Ravuso(his descendants are still living today-the tokatoka Vatutuva) 5th(3rd youngest son) Roko Yaroi whose descendants are ruling today as Tui Matuku( totoka Naseisei). The Tui Lakeba at that time who came with Maafu to the Matuku war was Viliame (William) Vuetasau (c.1820-1857) was the son of Roko Malani, the seventh Roko Sau of Lau and second Tui Nayau and Ciri of Taqalevu. His wife was Roko Salote Vakaotia,the daughter of Roko Rakuita. That was why Tui Yaroi stopped the war in Matuku after 6 months that Maafu & Rt Viliame Vuetasau couldn't conquer & used Rt Viliames wife to bargain with Tui Yaroi. Tui Yaroi couldn't say no to his daughter.Viliame (William) Vuetasau (c.1820-1857) was the son of Roko Malani, the seventh Roko Sau of Lau and second Tui Nayau and Ciri of Taqalevu. During the reign of his Uncle Taliai Tupou, third Tui Nayau, he was considered heir to the title. He was the first of his noble line to be given a western name, William, after Willam Cary, survivor of the Nantucket whaling ship Oeno that was wrecked in the Lau Islands in 1825. William Cary was rescued by a brother of Roko Malani, who in time became close friends with Roko Malani himself, who named his son after the New Englander, demonstrating his attachment to the shipwrecked sailor.

    Vuetasau was instrumental in strengthening the hold of Christianity in Lakeba, and thereafter the rest of Lau. On the arrival of Christian missionaries William Cross and David Cargill on Lakeba in 1835, an announcement of their mission to Taliai Tupou was made and accordingly they were conducted to Matailakeba, his heirs' house, while the purpose of their coming was once again explained. Vuetasau approved and Taliai Tupou in turn followed suit and the missionaries were allowed to stay and establish a church.

    Vuetasau never succeeded to his uncles title as he drowned in 1857 whilst in an expedition with Tongan Chief Enele Ma'afu. His eldest son Ratu Tevita Uluilakeba II would in time succeed to the title Roko Sau, but would similarly like his father share a premature death never succeeding to the title Tui Nayau.

There is a recorded version during the NLC Commision 1936 that the Tui Matuku title was formed long before Christianity, when the Vanua of Matuku was divided into two, Vanua of Daku and the Vanua of Yaroi which was once led by the Mataqali Nakai before Roko Rakuita descendant of Ro Nawadaradra and Ro Taginakaibeqa settled Matuku. The former, vanua of Daku was notorious at that time. Then came Roko Rakuita in which Nakai then forfeited the title due to his hard and merciless character (his traits that led his exile from Levuka Lakeba by his uncles on one account would slaughter villagers of Lakeba for big feasts) and conquered the Vanua of Daku and united the lands of Matuku under one banner hence the title Tui Matuku was borne. Whats questionable here is the timeline of Roko Rakuita which seems to contradict with whats on record. Can you please reveal your source as it might shed some light into this discussion.

  3. The title Rokosau is from tovu totoya always have till today and always will.. the betelevu of totoya had already foreseen the arriving of Christianity. This is why totoya accepted the lotu because we were already living the true lifestyle of a Christian. And the Rokosau then did not go to Lakeba the Tui Nayau sent his wife with her herald down to totoya... and we accepted it for it was already forseen....

  6. FYI TaginadranikaiBeqa didn't conquer the whole of matuku, He was from Ra and the people of Baba Matuku were from Naitasiri. There is no such thing as vanua o daku in Matuku, daku is just a village commonly known as Makadru. It should be Baba Matuku. The people of Yaroi were war wary clans leaving separately in the bushes before taginadranikaibeqa came and unite them to form a village. Taginadranikaibeqa constantly fights with the warriors of Baba Matuku under the Ratu but was unsuccessful. Thats why people of Yaroi and people of Makadru don't usually get along well, even today a simple game of rugby can be end up in a big brawl between the two village. Taginadranikaibeqa made peace with the people of Daku and they decide to live at peace as neighbours but two separate kings The Tui Matuku and the Tui Yaroi. After Taginadranikaibeqa passed away the Ma'afu war started and Tui Yaroi and his son was taken to Lakeba where Tui Yaroi was killed in Lakeba and His son Saronicava returned to Matuku. The name Matuku and the title Tui Matuku is from the hinterland of Naitasiri and belongs to the Ratu of baba matuku at Levukaidaku village. Tui Yaroi's son came back from Lakeba and went to ask his uncle of Baba Matuku Roko Ratu Coriakula Kolimainauluvatu to give him the title of Tui Matuku so people can respect him for he was shameful that he didn't return with his father. The then Tui Matuku Ratu Coriakula Kolimainuluvatu didn't hesitate and gave his title to his sister's son and nephew Ratu Meli Saronicava because of their close blood ties. He was the only Tui Matuku traditionally installed in Levukaidaku before being taken by the warriors of Baba Matuku to Yaroi. Until today there is still no Tui Matuku unless you come across some self proclaimed once. Unless traditionally installed by the Ratu from levukaidaku then Tui Yaroi can be called Tui Matuku. Please stop your arrogance and get your facts right. The Gone Ratu and Tui Yaroi are a close knitted family it's commoners of Matuku like you that are trying to split the two chiefly family of Matuku. Today there is no Tui Matuku in Yaroi that's why they are still refered to as Roko...i.e Roko Niu, Roko Bale, if traditinally installed he will be called Roko Ratu which is the highest title in the fijian hierarchy system....... Jeremaia Coriakula... Vinaka Saka.
